Equity in Education Tax Credit (EETC)
The 2001 Ontario Budget introduced the EETC which provides a credit to parents on the first $ 7,000 of eligible tuition fees paid per child to an independent school in Ontario. For 2003, the maximum credit is 20% or $ 1,400 per child (rising to 50% or $3,500 per child by 2006).
The credit is available to a parent or legal guardian of a child between 4 and 20 years of age, who is attending an eligible private school that has its principal place of instruction in Ontario. We recommend that you check with the school to make sure that it will satisfy the requirements for eligibility for the credit for the 2003-04 school year.
Tuition fees used to calculate the credit must be reduced by: 1) any scholarships or bursaries received, 2) the portion of the fees that represent child care expenses, and 3) for the amount qualifying as a charitable donation.
